Rotary Hands-On Day a great success
14 May 2011 Rotary in Malta today ran the 3rd in a series of Rotary Hands-On Days, on this occasion, at St Theresa's Home in Zurrieq. The event proved to be a great success with 90 volunteers, mostly young, non-Rotarians, involved in undertaking a large number of jobs in the home.
The hardest job was the digging and removal of soil from the back garden in preparation for some building works. This saw a team of about 30 people manually loading the soil onto a train of wheel barrows, through the home and out to the side garden. This difficult work was undertaken tirelessly by the volunteers.
A team, mostly made up of young girls handled the painting of the railings on the staircase that winds through 3 stories of the building while another team painted doors. The large gardens were tidied up by another team, while balcony railings were painted and the home's common room was also painted.
A constant stream of water and other drinks were served together with food fuelling the workers. Lunch, provided by the InterContinental Malta was a welcome respite from the hard work.
Once again, an interesting aspect of the Rotary Hands-On Day was the fact that many of the attendees have attended the previous events. Not least of whom were the contingent of employees and friends from GFI, whose support in bringing 47 people to the event was once again of fantastic assistance together with their financial sponsorship.
With the number of volunteers having reached the maximum that could be handled on the Rotary Hands-On Day, two sub-teams were hived off and sent to other institutes. A team went to paint at the Ghabex Shelter for battered wives in Santa Venera, and another team went to paint at Dar il-Kaptan.
The Rotary Hands-On Days are held in collaboration between all the Rotary affiliates including Rotary Club Malta, Rotary Club La Valette, Rotary Club Gozo and Rotaract.
