Rotary Hands-On Day a Great Success
11 April 2010
The second Rotary Hands-On Day organised by Rotary Club Malta, which was held yesterday at DarJeanne Antide was a resounding success with 75 volunteers helping to undertake a make-over of the girl's shelter in Santa Venera, Malta. The event, held was held in a collaboration between Rotary Club Malta, Rotary Club La Valette and Rotaract Club Malta.
The Hands-On Day resulted in major refurbishment work being undertaken including the following:
we painted the two massive corridors - not an easy job given their bad state and their height
- we painted the huge room which will be used as a multi-purpose room/gym
- we painted a number of the most used doors
- we sanded and scrapped the iron railings by the entrance and painted them,
- a major sanding operation was carried out on the benches in the back garden, both the wood and the metal, which were then painted
- we cleaned up the garden at the front
- we made a major improvement to the back garden, de-weeding it and planting some new plants - this was in a much worse state than the front garden
- other areas received a general clean-up
Interesting was the fact that many of the people registered are serial participants, having taken part in the first highly successful Hands-On Dat at Dar il-Kaptan held 6 months earlier. While many volunteers have of course also come from Rotary Club Malta, Rotary Club La Valette and from Rotaract, most of the participants are non-Rotarians wanting to assist an extremely worthy organisation.
Support for the event also came from many corporate sponsors including GFI, who have 17 of their staff and 18 of their friends attending, Calamatta Nurseries, who again are providing plants to be planted on the day, Borg Hardware Store of Gzira and Giuseppe Vichi Arredamenti, who provided various materials and Hempel Paints and Bartoline who are providing paint as well as Amigos Restaurant who provided the salads.
The objective of the Rotary Hands-On Day was to get volunteers to go up to DarJeanne Antide for a fun day where, with our own hands, we give a lending hand to the girl's shelter.
