Hands-On Day at Dar il-Kaptan a Resounding Success
3rd oct 2009Who says young people are not interested in helping society?

Seventy people gave up their time on Saturday to volunteer for Rotary Club Malta’s Hands-On Day held at Dar il-Kaptan, the respite home in Mtarfa, rolling up their sleeves to update, makeover and maintain the property and gardens of Dar il-Kaptan. The house was painted, garden tended to with new plants sown, the garden furniture was sanded and varnished, the roofs were waterproofed, the rooms and corridors painted, the windows sealed, the fly nets repaired and the list goes on.

The objective of the Rotary Hands-On Day was to get Rotarians from Rotary Club Malta along with Roteract members, together with friends, families and colleagues, to go up to Dar il-Kaptan for a fun day where we would spend energy, rather than money, making a difference. It is incredible what a difference we made. Many hands made light work.

The response from young volunteers shows that society is always willing to help a good cause” The Governor of Rotary District 2110, Sicily & Malta, Francesco Arezzo and his wife Anna, were also among the volunteers.

The volunteers were organised into gangs by Rotarian Lennard Pal, with each gang being led by a professional in the field. Gangs were allocated to painting, gardening, wood work and general maintenance.

During the Hands-On Day we:
  • plastered most of the rooms & corridors
  • painted the rooms and corridors (and some floors!!!)
  • painted the roof and terrace with waterproof paint
  • sanded the garden furniture and varnished it
  • torched old paint off one particular table
  • we completely restored the garden including planting 200 new plants, mowing the lawn, pruning one particularly stubborn tree
  • mended the external fencing
  • sealed the aluminium windows with silicone
  • repaired/replaced the mosquito/fly nets
  • repaired various electrical systems
  • repaired doors, door handles etc
  • cannibalised 5 computers which were not working to leave 3 fully functional computers
  • fixed new signage outside the entrance
  • tidied the electrical wires into trunking
  • reattached 20 sets of curtain rails
  • put up shelving
  • made wooden boxes to protect the water pumps
  • clean up after ourselves, scrubbing floors of paint etc
  • gave a general cleaning
All this was done while the services team cooked for 75 people a B-B-Q of burgers and sausages complete with salads, potatoes, pasta and couscous washed down with beer and wine.  Cakes and sandwiches were constantly available with smiling servers!!!

What was great also was that we had many individuals there who have offered to come back and help out Dar il-Kaptan on an individual basis.

“The most interesting thing was the impact that you can have in one day. A complete make-over was effected in just one day. This was also made possible through the support received from our sponsors who donated supplies to this event” said Rotarian Lennard Pal. "We thank our invaluable Sponsors: Badger Karting, Berger Paints, Calamatta Landscapes, Domestica, Farsons, GFI, Giovan Hardware, Hard Rock Cafe, Waterproof-it."
