June 2010 Club Newsletter
As we get closer to the end of the Rotarian year, many of the elements planned for the year are now coming together and being finalised.
May has once again been a very busy month for our club particularly with the work that lead to the Club's fund raising Gala Dinner on the 15th. This event was once again very successful with 274 people attending and us raising the princely sum of EUR27,060 in one night.
This money goes to fund the solar heating projects which are now also nearing finalisation. More details below. |
| FUND RAISING GALA DINNER | |
Again a great success
This year's Fund Raising Gala Dinner held on the 15th May at the Joinwell showroom was once again a very successful event with 274 attendees and EUR27,060 being raised in one night for our major projects of the year, the Dar il-Kaptan and the San Blas solar heating projects.
In addition to 35 of our members being present on the night together with their spouses, we had a strong contingent from Rotary Clubs La Valette and Gozo as well as 34 visiting Rotarians from Rome, 8 from the Rotary Club of St Etienne Horizon and 5 Turks who were participants on the Group Study Exchange to Malta and Sicily. The bulk of the attendees were non-Rotarians.
As in previous years we had corporate sponsors taking a table for a contribution. These included Communique Creative, Deloitte, Eden Leisure Group, Frank Salt Real Estate, GO plc, Joinwell, KPMG, Mamo TCV, Mediterranean Bank plc, Mediterranean Insurance Brokers, Red October and Shireburn Software.
We also had a very successful auction of paintings by 12 of Malta's leading artists who generously donated paintings for the event. These were Jacqui Agius, Henry Alamang, George Apap, Celia Borg Cardona, John Borg Manduca, Marc England, Winston Hassall, Tonio Mallia, John Martin Borg, Joe Pace Ross, Arnold Sultana and Simon Theuma. Click here to see paintings.
The auction was very well conducted by Rotarian John Cooper and raised EUR10,300. A raffle consisting of prizes donated by VirtuFerries, Myoke and Victor Azzopardi Jewellers raised an additional EUR2,600.
Many thanks to all who worked very hard for this activity particularly Rotarians Frank Salt, Ian De Cesare, Simon Bonello, Pussy Gatt and Salv Stellini as well as Nadja Distefano, Catherine Cassar Torregiani and Annelise Poulton.

| AN UPDATE ON OUR SOLAR ENERGY PROJECTS | |
Solar Energy at Dar il-Kaptan & Caritas San Blas
The installation of the solar energy systems at both Dar il-Kaptan and San Blas has been completed. While San Blas has connected the solar equipment to their systems and are fully operational, we expect this to be achieved at Dar il-Kaptan within the next 2 weeks.

It is estimated that the project will be saving around EUR80,000 for the two institutes over the life-span of the equipment.
The money for this worthy project was raised through our fund raising dinner. |
| PERU CHURCH CHAIRS | |
Another Club Initiative
Our Club has contributed $1,500 to Fr Victor Zammit, a missionary in Peru who has built a new Malta-branded church in Peru, to be used for the purchase o
f chairs for the church.
This project was partly funded by a donation from an anonymous Rotarian who has been supporting the building of the church over these years.
A Rotary Club Malta plaque is being erected to recognise our club's contribution.

| UPCOMING EVENTS in JUNE | |
June is a shortened month of meetings with our first Monday meeting falling on a holiday and the Hand-Over dinner occurring on Monday the 25th June.

We do have two exceptional speaker's nights planned for the Monday:
On Monday 14th we have well-known raconteur and cardiologist Prof Albert Fenech whose chosen topic is "Of twisting knickers and dicky tickers." Due to the Italy Paraguay game starting at 8:30pm that evening we have brought the meeting time forward. We shall meet for drinks at 6:45pm and start the talk sharply at 7:00pm and will be over by 8:15pm.
On Monday 21st we have invited back Dr Marco Cremona to speak to us just after his return from climbing Mount Everest. Although it is unusual to have the same speaker twice in such close succession we believed that this was well merited.
The President's Handover Dinner is then taking place on Friday 25th June in the gardens of Palazzo Parisio. We have managed to obtain an excellent menu at very reasonable pricing for what promises to be a lovely close to the Rotary year. More details and on-line booking available on-line. You can also opt to advise your attendance with Secretary David Degiovani on 9949 4067 or send us an e-mail.

| PLAY - All the Great Books (Abridged) | |
A hilarious evening
Those of you who missed our meeting of Monday 24th May were we had a private showing of the comedy "All the Great Books (Abridged)" at the St James Cavalier Arts Centre in Valletta should be kicking themselves.

The extremely entertaining play with an excellent multi-talented cast of 3 people had us all in fits of laughter. The evening started with a light meal.
Many thanks to Simon Bonello for putting this together (as well as for providing the photo). |
| DISTRICT CONGRESS | |
4th-6th June - Giardini Naxos
