Changing of the Guard
25 June 2010
The 2009-2010 Rotary year came to an end for Rotary Club Malta during the official Presidents' Hand-Over Dinner held on Friday 25th June at Palazzo Parisio. Outgoing President, John de Giorgio, handed over the chain of office and passed the club bell into the safe hands of Rotary Club Malta's President 2010-2011 Ian De Cesare.
President John de Giorgio (right) provided a summary of the year's activities and a self-critique of the objectives set upon himself at the start of the year. Rotary Club Malta had another particularly busy year having raised over EUR42,000 during the year which funded the undertaking of 13 projects culminating in the major project for the year involving the implementation of solar heating at Dar il-Kaptan, the respite home in Mtarfa, and the San Blas Drugs rehabilitation Centre run by Caritas.
Rotary Club Malta also ran two Rotary Hands-On Days at Dar il-Kaptan and Dar Jeanne Antide. Click here for details of Rotary Club Malta's other projects.
During the evening a number of Rotarians were recognised for their contribution with the award of a Paul Harris award. These included:
Incoming President Ian De Cesare for his great support during the year and particularly his work in managing the implementation of specific projects
- Tony (Pussy) Gatt for his work in organising the Club's events such as the Governor's dinner and fund raising dinner
- Treasurer Francis Naudi (in picture on right) for his long standing contribution to the operations of the club in his role as treasurer for so many years.
- Simon Bonello (in absentia) - Club President 2008-2009 for his outstanding work as President in his year as well as his unstinting support of the Club's activities during 2009-2010
- Past President Frank Salt (in absentia), for his successful leadership of the Club's main fund raising dinner as well as his contributions to the Club's projects
In addition, the President was also pleased to award a Paul Harris to Antonella Agius Micallef, a member of the Dar il-Kaptan team since the inception of the respite home who has and continues to work tirelessly for the interests of Dar il-Kaptan.
President John recognised the financial contribution to fund raising made by many of our members as well as the corporate sponsors who assisted the club both with materials for the Hands-On Days and with financial contribution. President John also recognised the contribution of the board members and many other members who assisted the Club's activities in many ways.
Incoming President Ian De Cesare thanked Outgoing President for his contribution during the year and set out his plans for the new Rotary year including continuing the strong service focus of Rotary Club Malta and also making the Club's meetings even more relevant to members.
82 Rotarians and their partners attended a excellent dinner held in the beautiful surroundings of the gardens of Palazzo Parisio.
