The Mission of Rotary International

The Mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary Clubs, is to act through the Clubs to promote high ethical standards and to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through its fellowship of business, professional and community leaders.

Rotary’s motto Service Above Self is applied through:
  • Club Service: Members’ fellowship and active participation in club activities and smooth-running.
  • Vocational Service: Members who, through high ethical standards in their professions, serve the community in a way that should inspire others.
  • Community Service: Implementing Club projects and activities that improve the life of the local community.
  • International Service: This involves humanitarian projects worldwide initiated by individual clubs working jointly with clubs in other countries particularly in poorer and less developed nations to alleviate hunger and improve the lives of the less fortunate. It also involves contributing financially and otherwise to global Rotary Foundation programmes like PolioPlus.
The Rotary Foundation, has been set up as a strong arm of Rotary International to help and encourage clubs who offer service to others. It provides know-how and in approved cases financial assistance for humanitarian projects.

The Rotary Foundation has created and operated PolioPlus project on which it has spent over $600,000,000 over the years . Thanks to this programme today 210 countries and territories are polio free. Recently The Gates Foundation has put in $100m into PolioPlus to match $100m in new funding from Rotary Foundation to finish polio for good!

The Rotary Foundation also provides financing for Volunteer Service Grants, Disaster Recovery, World Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Grants for University Teachers in developing nations and the exchanges of groups of young professionals for four to six week itineraries of vocational, educational and cultural trips across nations and continents.
